WAKE UP SHETLAND!

NEWS ITEM:

It is now becoming more evident that there is some sort of ‘conspiracy’ towards the fishing industry when we consider the farce of the latest Cod Recovery Plan, our boats, fishing with 120mm nets are only allowed 15 fishing days per month, the Danish industrial trawlers, fishing with 15mm nets are allowed ‘unrestricted’ free fishing on the same fishing grounds, why? This is not conservation!

A 'furious' Shetland whitefish, fishing boat skipper, fishing his traditional fishing grounds in local waters, was told to 'go away' by a fleet of Spanish 'gill netters' working close to the Shetland North West coastline. The new 'Spanish Armada' are working on the edge of the Shetland continental shelf, collectively, using 'hundreds of miles' of netting on the seabed, to catch everything in its path, Cod included. The Spanish fleet are 'cleaning out' local grounds using this practice and are outwith Shetland's local control.

The Shetland, Orkney, and Scottish fleets are being 'attacked' on all sides at present. Uncontrolled Spanish gillnetting, uncontrolled industrial trawling with micro mesh trawls and an uncontrolled UK Government spewing out more rules daily. These practices are destroying an infinite 'renewable' food resource for the nation.

SOUL are pressing for the reintroduction of Udal Law and 'local control' over the sea and seabed, out to the Shetland and Orkney continental shelf edge, we can then introduce a meaningful 'Cod Recovery Plan' that will work, and allow fishing to continue on a 'controlled' basis. We in Shetland and Orkney can then rebuild a 'Sustainable', and profitable, fishing industry for the long-term benefit for everyone concerned.
